Shelter Children’s Home—fondly known as Simba Village—is home to 176 children, both boys and girls, who have faced some of life’s most difficult circumstances. We care for orphaned, abandoned, destitute, and abused children, as well as those rescued from harmful cultural practices like FGM and early marriages. The Government of Kenya, through the Children’s Office, places these children under our care. Once here, we focus on rehabilitating, nurturing, and supporting their reintegration into loving families and the wider community.
Our journey began in 1994 as a simple women’s project, where a group of dedicated women came together to provide meals to street children and children from vulnerable households. Over time, the needs grew, and it became clear that the children required more than just food—they needed safety, stability, and a place to call home.
At that pivotal moment, Florence Wanjiku, though unwell, entrusted Mary (her granddaughter-in-law) with a heartfelt mission: to grow the small feeding initiative into a centre that would care for vulnerable children holistically. Answering that call, Mary left her prestigious job at the university, and in 1997, Shelter Rehabilitation Centre—now Shelter Children’s Home (Simba Village)—was born.
Today, by the grace of God, and through the unwavering support of donors, partners, and well-wishers, Simba Village continues to bring hope, dignity, and purpose to the lives of the children entrusted to us. Every day, we work to restore joy, build confidence, and provide a loving environment where each child can thrive and discover their God-given potential.
